TGW STINGRAY Shuttle – Discovering potentials and strengthening the competition

The scalability and modularity of the STINGRAY system offers a number of design opportunities of the solution concepts.
The shuttle technology has established itself in the materials handling industry and has determined and developed its areas of operation. Even though it is often said, it does not substitute classic mini-load stacker cranes but collaborates with them in a system’s solution. It is just a question of customer requirements and the system’s background – then the shuttle is able to convince with its advantages and to guarantee an ideal solution. Especially in highly dynamic solutions for the replenishment of workstations or for the sequenced preparation in the goods-out area, shuttles offer efficient performances,”
says Eric Große, Senior Product Manager for shuttle systems at TGW. This is why shuttle solutions are implemented in various industries from apparel and grocery to general merchandise.

Changing market

Many companies make their business not only in one channel anymore, but they operate in multi-channel processes. Above all, the overproportional growing e-commerce and m-commerce has changed the requirements to materials handling solutions. Future oriented customers need flexible solutions for their order and return handling in order to keep up the competition in the long term. Efficient return handling is gaining more and more importance. The returns rate might increase up to 50 % and might be even higher depending on the industry and the company. Both processes have something in common, the least number of items needs to be handled in the highest possible frequency, which increases the logistics costs per piece and decreases the company margins. Beside eroding margins, the demographic change and the growing network of companies demand a higher degree of automation in connection with an extremely high availability and delivery precision. The scalability and modularity of the STINGRAY system offers a number of design opportunities of the solution concepts. TGW is able to adapt the system exactly to the customer’s wishes, such as minimal lot size and system throughput times or strong variations in order and item structure independent of the industry. Where conventional, rigid systems face their limits pretty soon, TGW is able to create a competitive advantage for its customers by innovative solutions based on the STINGRAY system be it postponed order times or faster reaction times. TGW implements the STINGRAY system in combination with their modern ergonomic picking workstations and the new KingDrive® conveyor technology. In order to use the installed mechanical performance efficiently, sophisticated controls and IT strategies and concepts are of utmost importance – TGW implements these strategies according to individual customer processes. Thus, TGW’s customers are able to adapt to their new conditions and independent of rigid business models.

The right warehouse technology

Together with the STINGRAY shuttle system, TGW offers an extensive service portfolio for automated mini-load warehouses. “For our customers it is important that we realize their ideal system with an attractive cost-benefit ratio. With the STINGRAY shuttle system as one component in the system, many of our customers are already prepared for future expansions of their materials handling processes,” says Eric Große.
