Mercadona stays fresh with TGW

A new order picking system for fresh fruits and vegetables in Guadix, Spain.
Mercadona, Spain’s number one supermarket chain, received a new full crate order picking system for fresh fruits and vegetables in its logistics platform in Guadix (Granada, Spain). TGW Ibérica offered them a solution improving the freshness of their items in the stor
The order lead time is at maximum 6 hours, in order to guarantee the goods’ freshness.
TGW has already implemented a number of logistics facilities for Mercadona – the common success of both companies continues. The partnership between supermarket chain Mercadona and logistics provider TGW has already proved its success. A number of logistics installations have already been implemented for the great variety of Mercadona’s goods. This time, TGW has installed an order picking system for fresh goods.

New distribution centre in Guadix

More than 1,450 supermarkets throughout Spain, 74,000 employees with fixed contracts, a revenue of more than 19,000 million Euros – these aspects all prove Mercadona’s success. And all these stores need to be served by a network of distribution centres. The constant growth demanded a new installation in Guadix, to further guarantee the replenishment of shops in the Southern area. About 80 stores are served by the new distribution centre, which was equipped by systems integrator TGW. A new order picking system for fresh fruit and vegetables was implemented. The new order picking solution supports the surrounding processes by a fully automated system. The solution is efficient and accurate. TGW Ibérica realized the system with picking robots in the form of overhead cranes.

Research & Development with innovative ideas - avoiding overloads in the picking process

300 different fresh goods are handled in the Guadix distribution centre of Mercadona. The new order picking system includes eight overhead cranes, which handle about 30,000 totes per day. This solution serves as buffer storage while at the same time it functions as order picking. The fresh goods arrive on pallets in the distribution centre, which are depalletized by TGW equipment and divided into four stacks per pallet. Afterwards the goods are transported to the picking area on TGW conveyor equipment – however, here the totes are conveyed in stacks, which means that they are transported on top of each other. As soon as they arrive at the picking area, the overhead cranes collect the stacks and place them on the floor. Still the stacks contain only one SKU. Individual orders of the Mercadona stores are placed at the logistics centre and the overhead cranes automatically start to pick tote per tote and stack them onto each other again until the entire order is completed in one or more stacks of a maximum height of 2.2 metres. As soon as a stack is complete, it is buffered for a later dispatch procedure or it is immediately put onto a pallet for transportation to the designated supermarket.

Mercadona’s quality goods

Within 6 hours all goods are picked and transported to the supermarkets, which permits the supermarket chain to provide fresh goods for their customers each morning. TGW are happy to continue their partnership with Mercadona as the success of this project will give TGW the chance to use this picking strategy for that product range in future projects.
